In 2008, the Aarushi Murder case gripped the nation. Aarushi Talwar, was found murdered inside her home just days before she turned 14. At first, the family servant of Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar, Hemraj was the prime suspect. But the case took a unprecedented turn when Hemraj’s body was found dead on the terrace of their house, with the door locked from outside. Aarushi’s father, Rajesh Talwar was was arrested within seven days and later left on bail. But a CBI enquiry implicated both parents as guilty of the ‘double murders’ and both Rajesh and Nupur Talwar were sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court in 2013.

The subject has intrigued filmmakers and authors. ‘Talvar’ directed by Meghna Gulzar and starring Irfan Khan and Konkona Sen Sharma released in 2015 and was based on the subject.

Aarushi Avirook SenThe Allahabad High Court on Thursday overruled the trial court judgement and declared both Rajesh and Nupur Talwar innocent. The court acquitted them, saying no conviction can stand on the basis of mere suspicion. The couple had filed an appeal challenging a CBI court order convicting them in the murder of Aarushi and Hemraj.

The verdict on the Aarushi Murder case was highly anticipated and generated reactions from various quarters.
