Her piercing eyes, smoldering looks and powerhouse performances had cine goers smitten in the 70’s and 80’s. And more than twenty years after her death, her aura and brilliance still shine through. Smita Patil was only 22 when her remarkable performance in Shyam Benegal’s Bhumika won her a National Award. And as more and more of her films released she soon became known for her trailblazing talent. In fact, Smita Patil has the unique distinction of being the first and only Indian actress to be honored by French filmmaker Costa Gavras with a retrospective of her films at La Rochelle and Cinematheque Francaise. Although she started out with small budget films which were popularly known as art films or parallel cinema she soon crossed over to commercial cinema and beautifully balanced the two. On 13th December 1986, the world lost this hugely talented actress and on her following her death anniversary we look back at some of her prolific work.
