Tubelight released on 23rd June and with that, the inevitable comparison of the first day collections and the weekend collections with the past Salman Khan films happened. As expected the film did not cross the Rs 100 crore mark over the first weekend. Salman also couldn’t break his own first-day record of Rs 39 Crores set by Prem Ratan Dhan Payo in 2015. The day wise collection and the first weekend collection of Tubelight are as follows.

  • Friday – 20,75,00,000
  • Saturday – 19,75,00,000
  • Sunday – 22,25,00,000
  • Grand Total – 62,75,00,000

If we visit previous years, Salman Khan’s films have done exceptionally well over the first weekend. Sultan collected a whopping Rs 1,05,55,00,000 Crores with 4350 screens. Bajrangi Bhaijaan got Rs 1,01,42,00,000 at the box office and was screened in 4100 screens, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo collected Rs 97,63,00,000 Crores with 4200 screens and Kick made Rs 80,13,00,000 Crores and was exhibited in 3800 screens.

Salman Khan in Bajrangi BhaijaanSalman Khan in SultanWith Tubelight being screened in 4400 screens and the collections being only Rs 62 Crores plus in the first three days, we wonder if the critics hit the nail on the head this time round. One may also argue that Eid falls on Monday so the extended weekend collection is yet to come in but by the industry standards, the first three days and especially the first-day opening matters a lot. On the positive side, Tubelight stands second on the highest first weekend grosser of 2017.

  1. Bahubali: The Conclusion – 1,27,28,00,000 (ALL TIME RECORD)
  2. Tubelight – 62,75,00,000 apprx
  3. Raees – 59,48,00,000
  4. Jolly LLB 2 – 47,59,00,000
  5. Badrinath Ki Dulhania – 41,88,00,000

Meanwhile, on the day of the release, Salman Khan spoke to the media and his reaction to the critics showed that he didn’t care about what’s written in the papers.

“The critics were really good. I was expecting minus 3 and minus 4 but they gave 1, 1.5 apparently, so I am very pleased. As it is an Eid release, people have preconceived notions and plans to throw coins, sing and dance at the cinema hall. So they have gone to watch a certain film but get to watch another film. This film is not of a kind which you watch with your buddies as you will not get an opportunity to dance or have fun. It is a very emotional film. Even an emotionless, stone hearted person will get tears in his eyes. So this is an emotional film to be seen with parents, grandparents and the entire family.”

Salman Khan 2017 picWell, all we can say that let’s wait for the Eid day to end and hopefully Bhai might ring in 100 crores at the box office.
