16 December 2012 – a date that India will never forget. It was on this night that Nirbhaya was brutally raped and murdered by 6 men – one of them a juvenile. The horrific incident stopped the nation in its tracks. There were collective reactions of anger, shame and a unanimous call for justice.
While one of the prime accused – Ram Singh committed suicide in Tihar jail, the other, a juvenile at the time of the crime was sent to a remand home for three years – and now walking free.
On May 6th, 2017 – the Supreme Court ruled it’s verdict on the other four – Vinay Sharma (23), Akshay Thakur (31), Mukesh (29) and Pawan Gupta (22) were charged guilty and their death sentences upheld citing the crime as ‘rarest of rare.’
Nirbhaya’s parents feel justice has been finally served, though the loss they feel can never be healed.
Priyanka Chopra echoed similar sentiments when she took to twitter to write a heartfelt message to Nirbhaya.
