Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam (1962)

Meena Kumari set the screen on fire with her portrayal of a lonely wife, who later turns to alcohol thinking it will keep her philandering zamindar husband by her side. But it is her friendship with Guru Dutt’s character, Bhootnath that sets the template for the film. Etched with Meena Kumari’s raw sensuality – the film was a huge success when it released flooring critics and audiences alike. Watch it for the sheer poetry it weaves on celluloid.

Sahib Bibi Aur GhulamBandini (1963)

A love triangle with multiple layers, Bandini starred the enigmatic Nutan alongside acting stalwart, Ashok Kumar and a young and dashing Dharmendra Doing time in jail for murdering her lover’s mentally unstable wife, Nutan must ultimately choose between him and a young jail doctor who falls in love with her. Watch it for the layers it subtly weaves in this love triangle and for one of the most dramatically silent murder scenes shot.

Bandini Bollywood MovieGuide (1965)

It’s Dev Anand’s electrifying performance in this movie that makes Guide the cult film that it is today. Also, a mainstream film that finally brought infidelity out in the open through its main characters. Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman’s sparkling chemistry is a delight to watch. As are the twists and turns in their relationship that begins to emerge once they are finally together. Watch it for one of the most memorable romantic songs filmed in Hindi movies – ‘Gaata Rahein Mera Dil’.

Guide Hindi MovieAnand (1971)

Hailed as one of filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s best – Anand saw superstar Rajesh Khanna in a new seen before avatar. That of an ailing cancer patient and with no leading lady to boot… But it was the portrayal of Anand and his infectious positivity that had audiences in a puddle of emotions through the film. Amitabh Bachchan’s character as the doctor, lovingly called ‘Babu Moshai’ by Anand is the perfect foil. Watch this one for the sheer tugging at your heartstrings… especially in the last scene. And for that beautiful song – ‘Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaye’.
