IIFA has been all about celebrating Bollywood and the Indian films abroad. But in these 17 years, IIFA hasn’t been spared of controversies and moments that left us amazed. We get you 6 such moments and controversies that have surrounded IIFA over the years.
1) FEROZ KHAN SEEN IN HIGH SPIRITS
The year was 2002 when the veteran actor Late Sadhna was being felicitated and given a lifetime achievement award. Yash Johar & Karan Johar gave away the award to the yesteryear actor Feroz Khan climbed the stage in allegedly drunk position while praising his co-star Sadhna at IIFA 2002.
2) WHEN KAREENA SAID ‘HI’ TO SHAHID
This moment came across as a shocker in 2014 IIFA when Kareena Kapoor Khan went on the stage with hubby Saif Ali Khan and greeted her ex-flame Shahid Kapoor with a warm Hi!
3) PARINEETI UPSET WITH SONAKSHI’S SINGING DEBUT
According to reports Parineeti Chopra and Sonakshi Sinha has a cold war at IIFA 2015. Reason being that Pari wanted to croon on stage but seeing Sonakshi making her singing debut she got miffed with the organisers!
4) SHATRUGHAN SINHA AND BIG B’S TIT FOR TAT
In the year 2008, Shatrughan Sinha allegedly commented on seeing the nomination list which had ‘Guru’ as the maximum nominated film. The film stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Bachchan and Sinha had then said –
“Sab kissika beta hai, ya kissiki bahu, ya kissiki biwi (Everyone is either someone’s son, someone’s daughter-in-law or someone’s wife).”
To this Amitabh Bachchan lashed out at his colleague and wrote this in his blog.
“I am surprised at this observation, especially since, during the time of the National Award selection for Best Actress in one of the past years, when the award went to Raveena Tandon, it was alleged that Mr Shatrughan Sinha’s wife, the lovely and graceful Poonam, a great friend of Raveena’s mother had recommended the appointment of MacMohan, the brother of Raveena’s mother, on the board of the Jury ( Structured by the Government in power – in this case the BJP, of which Mr. Sinha was a Minister of State) in order that he may cast his vote in favour of Raveena Tandon. If this alleged story is true then I do value Mr. Shatrughan Sinha’s alleged statement of “Sab kissika beta, kissiki beti, kissiki biwi”
It was the year 2010 when Wizcraft declared Sri Lanka as the venue for IIFA 2010. Tamil groups started a protest and asked everyone to either boycott the awards or change the venue. According to them, Sri Lanka needed to be shunned as their military officials had killed Tamils in large numbers last year in the war that led to the decimation of the Tamil Tigers.
The South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce announced a boycott of Colombo by southern actors and filmmakers and said it would shun the Bollywood actors who would choose to go to Sri Lanka. Thereafter, IIFA brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan, his son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya along with Shah Rukh Khan and many others stayed away from the event. In fact Amitabh Bachchan had also shot for a promotional video in Sri Lanka and met the then Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa before he backed out.
There are strange things then there are stranger things that happen. In 2011 a fan ran up to the stage and grabbed Shahrukh Khan by his feet. The actor couldn’t do much but to wait for others to help him get away. The actor was gracious enough to promise to meet the fan later backstage.
