And right from black and white celluloid to now – Bollywood has captured the sheer essence of this season in the most imaginative ways possible! Whether it’s Nargis and Raj Kapoor crooning melodiously under an umbrella or it’s Sridevi getting sensual just right in her blue chiffon saree – Rain Songs in Bollywood are a genre in their own right. So, with the skies getting dramatic, the clouds getting greyer and raindrops drawing designs on our window sills – we thought what could be better than sipping some rum & coke and soak! Pyar Hua Ikrar Hua (Shree 420 -1955)
The image of Showman Raj Kapoor and the ethereal Nargis sharing an umbrella in the rain, in this song – has become an icon for Romance for all those Bollywood buffs out there. Their romantic walk in the rain resonates till date! In fact, in one adorable scene of the song – three children are seen walking in raincoats and they are Raj Kapoor’s children – Randhir, Ritu, and Rishi Kapoor!
Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si (Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi – 1958)
This effortlessly hummable song features the classic beauty of all times Madhubala and actor- singer Kishore Kumar. And though the song is shot in a garage setting – it has every bit the flavor of a rain song!
Rim Jhim Gire Sawaan (Manzil -1979)
The visuals and lyrics of this song capture the entire essence of the Mumbai rains! The gigantic waves lashing at Marine Drive, the puddles at Oval Maidan and everything around wet, wet wet – including the lead stars – Amitabh Bachchan and Moushumi – who are drenched to the bone and enjoying every bit of it!
Aaj Rapat Jaye (Namak Halal – 1982)
You could say this was one of the earliest quintessential Bollywood Rain Songs – as we know them today – Amitabh Bachchan and Smita Patil – steaming it up together – in a downpour! The song had it all – the rain, the romance, the clingy sari and some goofiness for good measure.
Kate Nahin Kat Te (Mr. India – 1987)
Sridevi’s sensuous moves in the blue chiffon sari in the legendary rain song Kate Nahin Katte from Mr.India is now an indelible part of Bollywood History. Anil Kapoor and Sridevi’s sizzling chemistry set the temperature really soaring in this song. And incidentally, Sridevi filmed the song despite suffering from high fever! Only a powerhouse performer like Sridevi can romance an invisible man so convincingly.

The music of 1942 a Love Story was Composer RD Burman’s parting shot before his demise. And his brilliance still resonates! It’s sheer innocence, magic, and melody all the way!
Tip Tip Barsa Pani (Mohra – 1994)
Raveena Tandon gyrating to this song in a yellow chiffon sari –seemed all set to do a ‘Sridevi’ from Mr.India. But while that didn’t quite happen – her moves along with Akshay Kumar & the lyrics – managed to put this song up there with all the hottest rain numbers of all times!
Rain is falling Chama Cham Cham! (Guneghar -1995)
Back in the 90’s a rain song bordering on cringe pop – made many Bollywood buffs sing along. The song was ‘Rain is falling Chama Cham Cham’ featuring Atul Agnihotri. Don’t believe the lyrics? Watch for yourself.
Koi Ladki Hai (Dil Toh Pagal Hain – 1997)
The quirky lyrics and Madhuri Dixit’s stunning dance moves – made this track from Dil Toh Pagal Hain a clear winner. It’s the rain song to stand up and dance to when you’re in the mood for some rain fun!
Jo Haal Dil Ka (Sarfarosh -1999)
This popular rain song from Sarfarosh saw Aamir Khan and Sonali Bendre steaming it up on a very wet day! Still remembered for the sizzling chemistry between the lead actors and the sensuous lyrics.
Baarish (Half Girlfriend – 2017)
This song was inevitable. With a rain scene in almost every movie she has featured in – Shraddha Kapoor is now the new age ‘rain girl’! And this song in Half Girlfriend captures the essence perfectly!
